Oscar Pistorius Sentenced
Athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year. Judge Thokozile Masipa also sentenced Pistorius to a three year suspended sentence on a firearms charge unrelated to Steenkamp’s death. The two sentences will run concurrently with the defence expecting the South African to serve approximately 10 months in jail.
Man Walks Again After Transplant
A paralysed man can walk again after new therapy from Polish surgeons. Darek Fidyka, who was paralysed from the waist down after a knife attack in 2010, has had cells from his nose injected into his severed spinal chord. The cells, chosen due to their ability to constantly renew, have restored feeling and movement to the legs of Fidyka. UK researchers were also involved in the therapy and the team are now looking to launch medical trials.
Ukraine Cluster Bomb Claim

Human Rights Watch have accused the Ukrainian Army of using cluster bombs on rebel areas of Donetsk,a rebel-held city in the north of the country. The deadly bombs scatter into smaller pieces and cause huge damage to areas and lives. Although banned by many other countries Ukraine did not sign the global treaty banning cluster bombs.
Oscar de la Renta Dies
Fashion giant, Oscar de la Renta, has died from cancer at the age of 82. The designer enjoyed huge success throughout the world, dressing various first ladies and most recently creating the dress for Amal Clooney’s wedding. De la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. According to a statement from his stepdaughter, he died surrounded by friends and family.
Total CEO Moscow
The Chief of French oil company Total, has died in a plane crash in Moscow. Christophe de Margerie’s plane was taking off when it collided with a snowplough on the runway. According to investigators, the driver of the plough was under the influence of alcohol. Margerie had been CEO of Total since 2007.
