THIRD PORTSMOUTH RADICAL DEATH
A third man from Portsmouth has been killed in Syria. Manunur Roshid is one of five men from the city who has joined the fight for extremist group ISIS. To date, 30 of an estimated 500 UK residents who have been involved in the conflict have died.
UK AIDS EBOLA EFFORT
100 UK medics are travelling to Sierra Leone to help in the efforts to tackle and contain the Ebola outbreak. The soldiers from The Royal Army Medical Corps leave as screenings begin in Gatwick airport. Nigeria and Senegal were declared virus-free last week, but Ebola has devastated West Africa and caused over 4,500 deaths.
REVENGE PORN MAY CARRY SENTENCE
‘Revenge porn’ will potentially carry a two year jail sentence in the UK. The House of Lords has unanimously agreed to make it a prosecutable offense to share a sexual image of someone without their consent. The bill will still need to go through the House of Commons before it comes into practice.
PRISON SUICIDES ON THE RISE
A new report has shown that suicides amongst prison inmates has risen by 69% in 2013-2014. Drugs, shortage of staff, and lack of resources are being blamed for the rise. The report, by Nick Hardwick, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons, claims that the overcrowding in the UK system is responsible for the 88 deaths.
VANDALS RUIN NEW BANKSY
Banksy’s new graffiti piece Girl with a Pierced Eardrum has been vandalised less than 24 hours after it went up. The piece is a mockup of Vermeer’s work Girl with a Pearl Earring, using an alarm system as the earring. This morning, the piece, which is at Bristol’s city harbour, was found with paint thrown over it.
