Stars in Scotland

Glasgow took centre stage of the music industry this weekend, as the MTV Europe Music Awards dazzled Scotland.

CONGRATS to @nickiminaj for winning Best Hip Hop! #MTVEMA

It was a wild evening from start to finish, with the event’s host (and winner of Best Hip-Hop) Nicki Minaj getting into the spirit by embracing Scottish culture. After crowning herself Queen of the Scots, the star began throwing out fake banknotes (which doubled as bar tokens) and leading the crowd in a sing-along to The Proclaimers.

But not everyone could get in with the fun. Boy band One Direction missed the show due to appearing on the X-Factor, and accepted their three awards (Best Pop Act, Best Live Act, and Biggest Fans) with a pre-recorded video.

Ariana Grande was visibly nervous as she accepted her awards for Best Song and Best Female. Considering she was performing on a plastic chair swinging high above the crowd earlier that evening, her nerves were understandable.

Katy Perry was another winner going home with multiple trophies. Not only did she snag the award for Best Music Video for her efforts on Dark Horse, but she also scooped up Best Look for her candy-themed costumes and extensive wig collection.

Between celebrity performances and wild after parties, the EMAs have put Glasgow on the map. And with an alleged £10 million brought in over the course of the weekend, it’s been a boost for the country’s economy as well.

Highlights of the night included Nicki Minaj performing a “Scottish rap”,  the Red Hot Chilli Pipers joining Ed Sheeran on stage, and David Hasselhoff in a kilt. Yes, really.
