Doctors fear for the health of Scottish children as a new survey shows only 14% of 2-15 year olds are eating their 5-a-day.

The results of the annual Scottish Health Survey has caused the British Medical Association to renew its call for free portions of fruit and vegetables to be provided in all primary schools.

The survey also revealed one in ten adults aren’t eating any fruit or vegetables at all.

Dr Andrew Thomson, from the BMA’s board of science, said: “Despite the growing cost of obesity-related conditions to the NHS, there has been no real improvement to the average amount of fruit and vegetables consumed by children in Scotland for over a decade.”
