Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is the favourite with the bookies to replace Jackie McNamara as manager of Dundee United.

Leading bookmaker SkyBet slashed the odds on the 46-year-old to land the vacant job at Tannadice Park to 7/4 after a flood of bets.

The former Celtic and Scotland star is eager to get back into management after leaving Villa in February and it is understood a return to his home country to re-establish himself would be a favourable option.

Former Tannadice favourite Steven Pressley yesterday ruled himself out of the running to succeed McNamara who was sacked last weekend by chairman Steven Thompson immediately after their 2-1 defeat to St Johnstone at McDairmid Park.

Others in the frame to take over include Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss John Hughes who is admired hugely by Thompson after Hughes delivered Inverness’s first senior trophy last term, while former Hibs star Mixu Paatelainen, who recently left his position as boss of Finland’s national team is second favourite to take over.
