The number of people living more than a century has increased by 80% in the last decade, according to a new report.

The figures released today by the National Records of Scotland have revealed that there are now an estimated 910 people who are aged over 100 living in Scotland.

That’s a 78% increase from 510 in 2004.

The overwhelming majority of those living over the century mark are women. In 2014, women accounted for 780 of Scotland’s centenarians (86%) while 130 men had reached the milestone. Although the male population aged 90 to 99 increased from 2013 to 2014, almost three quarters of people in their 90s are women.
