Pope Francis is alleged to have met with Kim Davis, the Kentucky marriage clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same sex marriage licenses, during a recent visit to the US.

According to Mrs Davis’s lawyer, Mat Stavers, the clerk spent fifteen minutes with the Pope in the Vatican embassy in Washington, although spokespeople for the Catholic Church have refused to confirm or deny these allegations.

Pope Francis is said to have “thanked her for her courage”, and told her to “stay strong”, Stavers told reporters.

Mrs Davis spent six days in jail in early September, over refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, despite a federal order.
