SNP whip resigns amid property investigation

Michelle Thomson MP

MP Michelle Thomson has stepped down from her frontbench post as SNP whip as well as business spokesman following a criminal investigation into property deals she was involved in.

It has been reported that she has been suspended from the SNP although she denies any wrongdoing.

The criminal investigation involves dealings with her former solicitor, Christopher Hales. Mr Hales was struck off following a Solicitors Discipline Tribunal in 2014 as a result of professional misconduct.

Following the hearing in 2014, it was reported that Mr Hales must have been aware that he was potentially facilitating mortgage fraud, whether or not it occurred.

EN4 News understands that Mr Hales worked for M&F Property, a firm of which Mrs Thomson is a partner. It is understood that the solicitor was charged for 13 transactions with the property firm.

Police Scotland told EN4 News: “Police Scotland can confirm that as a result of a complaint from the Scottish Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal, it has been instructed by the Crown Office to carry out an initial investigation into alleged irregularities relating to property deals in the year 2010-2011.”

According to the BBC, Mrs Thomson released a statement through the SNP on Tuesday evening in which she denies any wrongdoing.

In the statement she said: “I have always acted within the law and look forward to being cleared of any wrong doing.

“I have this afternoon decided to withdraw from the party whip whilst an investigation takes place.

“Once the investigation is concluded I look forward to returning to play a full role in party activities.”

Mrs Thomson quickly became a prominent member of the SNP when she became politically active through her involvement in the pro-independence campaign. She was then elected in May to represent Edinburgh West.
