A teenager is due to stand on trial today after a car was stolen with the owners dog still inside.

The 16-year-old was reportedly held in police custody following the theft on Friday. He will stand trial at Edinburgh Sherriff Court later on today.

The silver Honda CRV was stolen from a property on Willowbank Row in Newhaven with the owner’s two-year-old beagle still left inside.

It is understood that four youths attacked the 65-year-old owner of the car before one of them sped off in the nearby vehicle.

Detective Constable Alison Wylie told Edinburgh Evening News that: “Following an extensive inquiry local officers quickly traced and then arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with this theft.

“I want to reassure the public that vehicle crime is completely unacceptable and we are committed to using all resources at our disposal in order to arrest and charge those who take part in this criminal activity.

“Anyone who wants to report an offence in their area or has information on a crime can contact police on 101, speak to any officer or provide intelligence in confidence to the registered charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
