A rescue mission is currently underway to save an 82 year old yachtsman after his vessel suffered a mechanical failure 100 miles off the coast of Shetland.

Workers on a nearby oil and gas rig were put on standby to be evacuated after the vessel came within half a mile of the North Alwyn platform.

The alarm was raised shortly before 9 pm last night by a nearby supply vessel after they became concerned for the yachtsman’s safety. It is reported that the man refused to be airlifted by a Norwegian helicopter and is now being towed back to Norway by the Norweigian coastguard.

Weather conditions are making the rescue difficult but the Maritime and Coastguard agency has said that the man is not in any immediate danger.
