The First Minister has welcomed the awarding of a contract worth £16million to Edinburgh to refurbish diesel engines.

The contract, from Rolls Royce’s MTU division, was handed to Virgin Trains’ Edinburgh Craigentinny Depot. The deal will see local workers refurbish Virgin’s fleet of East Coast intercity diesel trains.

Virgin Trains MD David Horne announced the deal at the relaunch of his company’s ‘Flying Scotsman’ service to London, where he also announced a half-hourly service from Edinburgh from December, and new trains to Stirling.

Speaking at the event, Nicola Sturgeon said “I am…delighted that the refurbishment of Virgin’s diesel engines will draw on the local skills and talents of the Craigentinny workforce.”
