Britain’s female gymnasts made history last night after they took bronze at the World Championships in Glasgow.

The medal is the first ever won by a British women’s team and comfortably beats their previous best World Championships finish, which came when they finished fifth in Tokyo in 2011.

The USA eventually took gold with a score of 181.338, with China coming in second with 176.164 points. Britain finished with a total of 172.380.

Terrific performances on the vaults by Claudia Fragapane, Amy Tinkler and Ellie Downie helped GB, who had been outside the medal positions going into the final round, leapfrog Russia into third place.

Becky Downie and Ruby Harrold’s efforts on the bars and beam were also crucial as they continued their preparations for next year’s Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

On Wednesday, the men’s team will compete in their final after qualifying in third place.
