THE president of Ghana will visit the Scottish Parliament today as part of a wider trip around Scotland and to discuss trade.

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is set to meet the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, and the presiding officer, Tricia Marwick.

However, a meet and greet with opposition leaders has been cancelled.

Questions have been raised by human rights groups about Ghana’s policy for torture, and gay and women’s rights, as it is illegal to identify as a homosexual and those found out can face three years in jail.

Amnesty International has also identified multiple cases of excessive force and ill-treatment used on Ghanaian citizens.

They have urged MSPs to discuss this with the Ghana president whilst he is in the UK.

He will receive an honorary degree from the University of Aberdeen.
