Information sought on Edinburgh purse snatcher

Police in Edinburgh are re-issuing an appeal for information one week after an elderly woman had her purse stolen in Leith.

The incident occurred between 12.30pm and 1pm on Thursday 20th October in Portland Street.

The victim, who is in her eighties, answered the door to a man who forced his way into her home before stealing a purse from the living room and running off.

Within the purse was a three-figure sum of cash and inquiries are continuing to identify the suspect.

He is described as white, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 25-30 years old with a slim build, dirty brown hair, unshaven face and wearing a navy zip-up top.

Constable Peter Shannon from the Community Investigation Unit at Gayfield Police Station said, “Over the past week we’ve been pursuing various lines of inquiry to trace the male responsible and we are keen to hear from any members of this public that can assist with this investigation.

“The elderly woman was not injured during this incident but was left obviously distressed as a result and anyone with information is asked to come forward.

“In particular, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who may have seen him in the Portland Street or Blackie Road area, is asked to get in touch.

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
