Heart of Midlothian centre back John Souttar is confident the side can qualify for European football after a difficult couple of months.

Craig Levein’s men were the early league leaders in the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, but have since slipped to fifth place, 12 points behind table-toppers Celtic.

Having returned from a hip injury in last week’s 2-0 win over St Johnstone, Souttar is confident they can do the same again tonight against Kilmarnock.

“It’s starting to feel like the start of the season,” he said.

“I think you can feel the confidence building, going into Friday night [tonight] it will be a tough game obviously against Kilmarnock but we beat them earlier in the season right at the start so if we can do that again that would be ideal.”

When asked if he was worried about his injury, he said: “I felt good during the game on Saturday so fingers crossed. We’ve got a lot of fixtures coming up and it’s important that I look after my body and hopefully I can keep playing.”

“As I say hopefully if I play well for Hearts that will just run simultaneously but just now I’m concentrating on playing well for Hearts and getting us back towards the top of the table.”

Souttar reiterated that the aim for the club is to play European football, and with the return of Christophe Berra as well as himself, he is sure it’s achievable.

“Europe was the target from the start of the season and if you look at the league table, as much as we did dip off, we’re not actually that far away.

“Friday [tonight] is a big game. It’s a great chance for us, a great chance for them as well, and hopefully with a positive result we’ll be in a very good place.”
