Actor Charlie Sheen has announced that he is HIV positive on NBC’s Today Show. Diagnosed four years ago, Sheen claimed that he was being extorted by people who knew his secret.

Talking to Matt Lauer of NBC, Sheen said:

“I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV-positive, And I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about the [alleged] threatening the health of so many others, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.”

One of the people who blackmailed Sheen was a prostitute, who took a picture of his medication and threatened to sell it.

He also stated that since he learned of his status, he has informed all of his sexual partners that he is HIV positive. He had unprotected sex with two women since he found out and they are under the care of his doctor.

HIV is mainly spread through unprotected sex and by sharing needles and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 50,000 people contract HIV in the US every year, while around 1.2 million people have HIV in the US.
